Contact UsRhinoplasty (also known as a “nose job”), is one of the most popular facial plastic surgeries worldwide. Besides improving the aesthetics of the nose itself, a rhinoplasty can be used to improve facial balance, reduce humps, reduce/increase size of the nose, straighten a crooked nose, and address signs of aging.
For women, this procedure involves delicate precision and artful skill to preserve feminine features for an overall natural result.
The rhinoplasty procedure offers patients many potential benefits, which include improved appearance and function of the nose along with improved self-esteem.
In the modern female nose, the nose is slender and petite when looked at straight on and has a slight up-turn when looked at from the profile view.
Patients can expect to receive subtle or dramatic aesthetic improvements to the nose based on their desires. Because it is so versatile, the procedure offers custom results that can maintain a very natural facial appearance. Surgery with a talented surgeon will ensure that the focus of your face will no longer remain your nose and become what its true role should be, an accent piece.
Aside from the aesthetic benefits of a rhinoplasty, the procedure often provides psychological benefits as well. It can help patients gain confidence and self-esteem, feeling more open and comfortable in social situations and in photographs.
This rhinoplasty procedure is an outpatient procedure, meaning that patients can go home shortly after the procedure is complete. Typically, the procedure is completed under general anesthesia, as the procedure is fairly in-depth. During the surgery, Dr. Rana will make small incisions either inside the nostrils or on the columella (the strip of skin separating the nostrils). The approach used will depend on the goals of the procedure.
Once the incisions have been made, Dr. Rana can then fine tune and sculpt the underlying bone and cartilage that provide shape and structure to the nose. It is not uncommon to use cartilage grafts to re-shape the nose. This is typically taken from the extra cartilage (nasal septum) that already exists. The bones of the nose may be filed or reset to give adequate balance from the base of the nose to the tip. During this process, Dr. Rana will ensure that the functional structure of the nose remains solid. Once these changes have been made, the incisions are closed and the procedure is complete.
Learn MoreAfter rhinoplasty, patients can expect to spend about 7-10 days in recovery before returning to work. Swelling, bruising, and some discomfort can be expected, but ice and prescribed medication can make the recovery period fairly easy. Patients will have the dressings removed about 5 days post-operation.
For several weeks after the procedure, strenuous activity, bending, and lifting should be avoided. Though the swelling will subside quite a bit in the first month, the residual swelling will continue for up to 6-12 months.
Primary rhinoplasty is an extremely versatile procedure that can address a wide range of aesthetic issues. We tailor each procedure to help each patient reach his or her individual goals. Dr. Rana routinely performs rhinoplasties in Mckinney, TX to correct cosmetic concerns such as:
The nose is slow to mature. Maturity typically occurs around age 15-16 in girls and 16-17 in boys. Sometimes teens do get rhinoplasty surgery with parental permission, but it is important to wait until the nose has matured. If performed before this point, the nose could become distorted due to the natural changes caused by the growth process.
Sometimes, rhinoplasty patients are disappointed by their results. This is sometimes legitimate, due to complications or other issues, but it can also be due to unrealistic expectations or just simply needing time to adjust to the new look. Revision rhinoplasty can be performed after 12 months if the results are still not satisfactory, but this procedure is even more difficult than primary rhinoplasty and should not be taken lightly.
Many patients are worried that their nose will have to be broken during rhinoplasty. In reality, this process is nothing like an accidental break—the bones are instead cut and re-set for optimal positioning, function, and aesthetics. This process is quite common and shouldn’t cause any additional recovery time or discomfort.
These days, most surgeons have done away with nasal packing for rhinoplasty since it’s not needed anymore. Modern nasal surgery is safer and more comfortable than ever!
In most cases, the cartilage will be taken from the nasal septum and shaped for use during rhinoplasty. However, if there is an insufficient quantity of cartilage in the septum, cartilage from the ear or rib may be used instead.
Depending on the technique used, external incisions are sometimes not needed, and scarring is not visible. Even when the incision is made externally, such as on the columella, the scar typically fades very well and is nearly undetectable.
Only an expert facial plastic surgeon should perform cosmetic rhinoplasty procedures. It is an extremely complex surgery requiring a great deal of artistry, skill, and expertise. It’s not something you want to take chances on. Choose your plastic surgeon carefully, as they will be the biggest factor in the success of your procedure.
